Ask five engineers which cloud provider is "best" and you'll get five different answers, usually shaped by whichever one they learned first. The honest answer is that AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) all offer the same core building blocks — virtual servers, storage, databases, networking — and the differences that matter are in ecosystem, pricing shape, and what each one is genuinely built for.
AWS: the largest, most exhaustive option
Amazon Web Services launched first and it shows — it has the widest range of services, the largest community, and the most third-party tooling built around it. That breadth is also its main drawback for newcomers: the sheer number of overlapping services can make simple decisions feel complicated. AWS tends to be the default choice for startups and companies that want maximum flexibility and are willing to invest time in learning the platform.
Azure: the natural fit for Microsoft-centric organisations
Microsoft Azure's biggest advantage isn't a technical one — it's organisational. Companies already running Windows Server, Active Directory, or Microsoft 365 tend to find Azure integrates with what they have with far less friction. Azure has also invested heavily in hybrid setups, where some infrastructure stays on a company's own servers and some moves to the cloud, which matters for regulated industries that can't move everything at once.
Google Cloud: strongest in data and machine learning
GCP is smaller than the other two in overall market share, but it tends to win on specific ground: data analytics, machine learning infrastructure, and Kubernetes, the container orchestration system Google originally built internally. Teams whose main workload is data processing or model training often find GCP's tools feel like they were designed for that job specifically, because in several cases they were.
How pricing actually differs
All three bill by consumption, but the fine print varies. AWS is known for having the most granular (and sometimes confusing) pricing structure. Azure often has an edge for organisations with existing Microsoft licensing agreements. Google Cloud has generally positioned itself with simpler, more predictable pricing and automatic discounts for sustained use, rather than requiring upfront reserved-capacity commitments.
The "right" cloud provider is rarely the one with the best feature list — it's the one that matches the skills your team already has and the software you're already running.
A simple way to decide
- Choose AWS if you want the widest range of tools and the largest talent pool to hire from.
- Choose Azure if your organisation already runs on Microsoft infrastructure or needs strong hybrid-cloud support.
- Choose Google Cloud if your core workload is data analytics or machine learning.
Most large organisations end up using more than one, for different workloads. For an individual project or a small team, picking one and learning it well will get you further than trying to hedge across all three.
